What is Kinetic Poetry?

Kinetic Poetry is a fast-growing phenomenon, bringing its edgy and unique culture to Berks County. It is a unique performing arts event that fuses radical slam poetry and acrobatic dance such as aerial pole, hoop and acrobatic yoga in a theatrical setting. It premiered in Reading, PA in the Fall of 2011 at Albright College. It is the brainchild of pole performer and instructor Rachel Skye.

Impassioned by the art of pole dance, Rachel wanted to showcase the athleticism, grace and beauty behind pole dance to her home town of Reading. While pole dance is largely popular on the West Coast in California and other parts of the world such as the U.K. and Australia, it is still a growing art in Pennsylvania.

After meeting award-winning slam poet Egedeme in the winter of 2010, she and Egedeme teamed up and began brainstorming ideas for a new breath-taking, in-your-face kind of show. They partnered with Berks Bards and plans for the first annual Kinetic Poetry were underway.

September 24, 2011 marked the date of the 1st annual KP event. Rachel and Egedeme invited award-winning and nationally-recognized poets and dancers to perform. The audience was in awe of the gravity-defying movements of the aerial pole dancers and moved by the passionate words of the slam poets. It was a success and the audience was asking for more. In 2012, Kinetic Poetry added poi dancing to its repertoire and premiered the first ever aerial rings performance. With the 3rd annual Kinetic Poetry approaching this Fall, the performer lineup has expanded to include more aerial acts. Let Kinetic Poetry lead you in to a fantasy world where artistry is created through emotion.
